Oakridge is bordered by Granville Street on the west, Main Street on the east, West 41st Street on the north and West 57th Avenue on the south. Oak and Cambie Street which runs north and south are some of Vancouver’s busiest roads.
Oakridge was mainly undeveloped except for the Langara Golf course built in 1926 and some institutional buildings like boarding schools and hospital built prior to WW ll. It wasn’t until the 1950’s that there was development started from the wooded land; the Jewish community moved south along Oak Street and the Canadian Pacific Railway further opened up this area. There were many single family homes built and in 1959 the Oakridge Centre Shopping Mall was opened by Woodward’s Stores.
Because of the late development of Oakridge there are no heritage buildings but today has much to offer with Langara College, a vibrant Jewish community, and the wondrous VanDusen Botanical Gardens.
