Once known as a low lying marsh where aboriginal inhabitants fished the streams, Arbutus Ridge is now a community with renovated homes, tree lined streets, neighbourhood parks and magnificent views of the North Shore Mountains.
The CPR acquired over 2,100 hectares from the Province of BC in 1888 which included the land Arbutus Ridge resides upon now. Arbutus Ridge was once a part of three municipalities including South Vancouver until 1908, Point Grey and finally Vancouver in 1929. In 1905 the Electric Interurban Railway Line passed through the Kerrisdale area from Steveston and helped start development. The low marsh lands were filled in with sand from False Creek during the 1940’s and 50’s and soon houses, schools and shops were built. In 1960 Arbutus Village was created.
Arbutus Ridge is now in the middle of Vancouver’s Westside; has good access to Downtown Vancouver, Jericho Beach, Kitsilano, UBC and Pacific Spirit Regional Park.
